So what is Barbershopping all about?

Here are two stories of what it means to those of us who are ‘hooked’ on harmony!

Wendy’s Story as told by her sister Stephanie Demmler Dingle:

My sister is developmentally disabled and has spent the last 6+ years in assisted living. As a barbershop family, we all learned many songs when we were growing up.  Although her learning disability has prevented her from accomplishing many things that we take for granted every day - she was able to learn words and melodies to songs that we sang.

For the previous 7 weeks she was in a hospital and was not receiving the type of care necessary - partially due to  her inability to follow directions and partially due to the  facility not having the knowledge in handling her disability.  She was continuing to deteriorate physically and we  feared her dying (literally).

While visiting Wendy, her mom, Betty Demmler, asked about getting a quartet  to come sing for her.  So I contacted TJ Barranger who directs a chapter in Annapolis, MD - the Sons of

the Severn. Through the chapter president they reached out and made plans for a quartet to come sing for her prior to a rehearsal.

Now this was awesome in and of itself :-D !!  But it seems that they were having a 'visitor' that was extremely willing to participate in this non paying favor.... So my sister was serenaded by TJ Barranger; David Bankard; Jeff Supko ....... and Sean Devine of O.C.Times!!!

Tell me how many organizations have leaders willing to be a part of day to day 'good will' activities like Barbershoppers??  Most importantly is that during their singing to her, Wendy laughed, sang along & we were able to see the Wendy we knew was 'in there' that we haven't seen for many years .... And it was Barbershop Harmony that allowed this to happen !!!  We have feared that "This" Wendy was gone for good ~ But it Is Not So!!!

Sooo when people who consider joining ask "Why ?" ~ here is answer 6,589!!!
